 2017 Preview 


       Horseshoe Bend completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region five, the Generals earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Horseshoe Bend's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Fyffe by a score of 56-7.

       The Generals improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2012. It marked the first time since the 2012 season that the Generals qualified for the playoffs. The Generals last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Generals hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Averett saw improvement as they won six games following a 0-10 record in 2015.

       Since 2010, Horseshoe Bend has gone a combined 26-47. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Horseshoe Bend has not won much with a record of 88-172. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 2A and 325th in the AHSAA.

Jason Franklin leaves Horseshoe Bend after nine seasons with a 34-59 overall record. His teams made three playoff appearances but failed to produce a win in the post season. He has accepted the head coaching job at Holtville for the 2017 season.


Josh Averett, a graduate of Brookwood High School, played for Alabama in 2002 and 2003, lettering as a wide receiver in his final year. He worked as an assistant at Thorsby, Maplesville, Pelham and St. Clair County.

Averett was the head football coach at Gaston (2010-2012) with a 11-20 record.



       Coach Averett's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 11-20 (35.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Averett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The Horseshoe Bend Generals will play in Class 2A region five during the 2017 season.

       The Generals will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

      Cade Worthy returns for his Senior season after completing 69 of 103 passes for 993 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also rushed for -4 yards.

      Senior Trace Meadows also returns after rushing for 478 yards on 40 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 430 yards and another four scores.

      The defense returns Junior defender Dakota Hill with 71 tackles, Senior defensive back Nalijah Heard with 79 tackles and Senior linebacker Joe Railey with 4 interceptions last season.

       The Generals open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Donoho on Friday, September 1 at Lantz Field. Last year the Donoho Falcons finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 1A region four. The Falcons closed out the regular season with a loss to Woodland by a score of 54-35.

       Horseshoe Bend and Donoho have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Generals have a 2-2-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2016 with Horseshoe Bend winning by a score of 55-13.

       Horseshoe Bend returns 2A All-State Senior punter Chad Stinson. He was named to the second team last season.
